Senate Panel in Florida Starts Discussing Bill Restricting Hemp Products

A proposal introduced by Sen. Colleen Burton that would ban delta-8 THC hemp products is being discussed by legislators in Florida. The measure, SB 438, would also restrict levels of delta-9 THC in hemp products to 50mg per package and 5mg per serving. This is in addition to limiting the amount of THC per can or bottle to no more than 5mg for hemp-infused beverages and prohibiting the sale of these drinks at premises not licensed to sell alcoholic drinks. While introducing the measure to the Senate Agriculture Committee earlier this week, Burton explained that additional regulations would help ensure…

California Extends Prohibition of Hemp Products with THC

California recently extended a ban on intoxicating hemp products with THC that was set to expire before the end of March. This comes just months after the ban went into effect following legislators’ failure to approve a measure that would’ve regulated these products. Gov. Gavin Newsom first introduced the ban in September 2024, with the Office of Administrative Law approving the emergency rules that same month. Under the ban, the sale of consumable hemp products with any amount of THC was forbidden. THC is one of the main psychoactive compounds found in cannabis, CBD being the other. Unlike CBD though,…

Poll Finds More Consumers Want to Use Hemp Delivery Services

A new poll has determined that frequent consumers of marijuana like using delivery platforms to order their products. The poll involved 655 respondents and was carried out from February 20th to 23rd by Nugg MD, a leading medical cannabis technology platform. Results show that 55% of consumers liked buying marijuana products from applications like DoorDash. This news comes after DoorDash announced earlier in the year that they’d start delivering THC products derived from hemp in various markets, including New Jersey, where independent delivery firms and legal marijuana dispensaries are allowed to transport products to customers. The poll also found that…

Hemp Seeds Are Attracting Attention as an Alternative Source of Protein

The demand for plant-based proteins has increased in the last couple of years as consumer demand for animal-based proteins reduces. While wheat and soy have been the primary sources of plant-based proteins for a while, their link to allergenic issues has highlighted the need for other plant-based options. This has seen food producers explore other alternatives that don’t trigger food allergies as a way to better meet consumer needs. This is where hemp, a crop that’s been cultivated for millennia globally and was legalized for industrial use in America with the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill, comes in. Hemp,…

The CBD market in the United Kingdom has grown since the compound’s extracts were designated as new foods in 2019. Recently, a joint application filed by HERBL, Liverpool, and TTS Pharma, along with Bridge Farm Group, cbdMD, Mile High Labs, and Brains Bioceutical, passed the Food Standards Agency’s safety evaluation phase. These applications follow three granted to Cannaray, Pureis and a separate consortium in 2024. Each adheres to the 10mg acceptable daily intake threshold for CBD, which is even…

Tennessee Hemp Industry Faces Existential Risk as Lawmakers Mull Banning Intoxicating Products

The proliferation of intoxicating hemp products has seen states across the country approve various regulations making these intoxicants illegal. Now legislators in Tennessee are set to discuss proposals that may ban these products in their jurisdiction. While these proposals may help regulate these intoxicants, many believe that they will also adversely affect the legal hemp industry if approved. Maggie Clark, a Crossville businesswoman, believes that the measures will negatively affect small businesses and pave the way for conglomerates to occupy a larger share of the market. Her business, Cann I Help, grows, manufactures and retails hemp products. Measures tabled this…

The 2018 Farm Bill Loophole and What Can Be Done To Address It

Hemp was illegal in the U.S. since 1937 until its legalization with the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill. This bill made it legal for farmers in America to grow the crop for commercial use. While this was a huge feat in itself, it also created a grey area that allowed intoxicating cannabinoids to be legally sold in various states across the country. The loophole in question was established when the measure defined hemp as a marijuana plant with a delta-9 THC concentration of nothing higher than 0.3% on a dry weight basis. This interpretation, experts believe, is what led…
