Minnesota Hemp Farmer Shocked When Samples Are Seized in the Mail

The current U.S. hemp scene can only be described as confusing. In fact, the cash crop’s resurgence has been marked with lots of confusion due to a lax regulatory structure. The Farm Bill legalized the cultivation and sale of industrial hemp, and the only stipulation it made was that hemp had to have less than 0.3% THC to be considered legal. The industry has labored under this stipulation for the past year, and hemp farmers have had to bear the brunt. Ted Galaty, a Minnesota hemp farmer and owner of Hemp Maze Minnesota, recently had a package of industrial hemp…

9 Uses of Hemp You May Not Have Known

When the founder of Hemp for Healthcare in Alaska, Sara Marie Williams, was discussing uses of hemp, she said that hemp is amazing and world-changing. Sara Marie also quoted Jack Herer, where he said that he is not sure if hemp is going to save the world, but it is the only thing that can. She further noted that lawmakers and leaders should learn everything about the hemp plant because it represents the hope for the future of Alaska and the world in general. Hemp is defined as the phenotype of the cannabis sativa L, whose THC content is 0.3%…

Maine Farmers Consider Hemp Value Addition to Beat the Competition

For many farmers across the country, the 2018 Farm Bill was a godsend. For a while, they'd been looking for a new high-value cash crop that would guarantee them high returns. The legislation legalized industrial hemp after decades of prohibition, finally giving farmers access to a high return crop. The bill classified hemp as cannabis with less than 0.3% THC, and instructed states and tribes to create hemp programs and submit them to the USDA for approval. Just a year in and the market for hemp is worth millions of dollars in sales, and future projections are exceedingly positive. Although…

Georgia House Passes Hemp Bill

It will definitely take a while before the U.S. cannabis sector settles even if some states were already allowing medical cannabis within their borders before the 2018 Farm Bill liberated hemp from decades of prohibition. Defining hemp as cannabis with less than 0.3% THC, the legislation allowed growers to farm hemp under state or tribal programs. However, the bill didn't say much else regarding the regulation of hemp and its extracts, and this has resulted in a patchwork of state legislation and tons of confusion. Different states have different policies regarding hemp, and this has created major issues across the…

UN Narcotics Commission Has No Right to Classify Hemp, Says EIHA

The United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs (UN-CND) has no right to classify industrial hemp as a potential narcotic, according to the European Industrial Hemp Association (EIHA), which has requested for the provision of a transparent global legal framework for industrial hemp. In a press release, EIHA said that as per the UN Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs is not permitted to classify industrial hemp as a possible narcotic because hemp is not subject to international drug controls. EIHA further noted that industrial hemp has never been listed in that document nor the…

SD Governor and Legislators Disagree on Hemp Legalization Costs

On Tuesday, South Dakota Governor, Kristi Noem, and the state legislators differed on the cost estimates for legalizing industrial hemp as they discussed a final position to end their one year dispute over hemp. Legalizing industrial hemp would significantly change the way the state enforces its marijuana laws and more staff would be required, and, drug testing facilities would have to be increased as well as law enforcement across the three state agencies, the governor’s office argued. But the legislators argued that the industrial hemp program should be treated like any other agricultural crop that would require oversight by one…

Possible Benefits and Drawbacks of Coronavirus on the US Hemp Sector

The Coronavirus has led to a major slowdown in China's economy, and this has affected quite a number of industries. The country is almost infamous for producing tons of cheap raw materials and hardware, and industries that rely on it are feeling the pressure as a large number of factories see reduced or even zero production. The hemp sector is no different, and most hemp companies are likely to feel the fallout from the Coronavirus. The economic shock has reverberated throughout the entire world, and a certain cadre of U.S. cannabis firms may be adversely affected. Firms that sell CBD…

3 Hemp Titans Join Forces and Create Supply Chain

Hemp had been outlawed for decades until Congress passed the 2018 Farm Bill. The legislation made an important distinction between hemp and marijuana, defining hemp as cannabis with less than 0.3% THC, the main psychoactive chemical in marijuana. States and tribes interested in growing hemp were required to create and submit their hemp programs to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for approval. Within a year, the market for hemp was booming, mainly driven by the demand for hemp-derived cannabidiol. However, it's become quite clear that the hemp supply chain is riddled with issues. According to George Weiblen, a professor…

Ohio Starts Receiving Hemp Cultivation and Processing Applications

The Department of Agriculture in Ohio started accepting applications for hemp cultivation and hemp processing licenses on March 3. Growers who are interested in applying should head to the department's website for more details. The application is purely online, and it would include a mapping tool, which would help farmers indicate where they are planning to grow hemp. Although hemp can be cultivated across the state, the Department of Agriculture must approve all growing sites, and farmers can use clones or seeds to grow the crop. The department stipulated that the clones can only be obtained from licensed greenhouses or…
