NY Hemp Farmers Come Together as New Hemp Laws Take Effect

For many, the 2018 Farm Bill was a game-changer. The legislation legalized the cultivation and sale of industrial hemp and its extracts, finally allowing farmers access to an immensely profitable cash crop. Cannabidiol (CBD) has made hemp even more valuable. After just a year of legal sales, CBD is worth millions in sales, with experts saying it will hit $20 billion by 2024. Last December, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a much-awaited bill into law, finally giving the New York hemp/CBD industry a regulatory framework for hemp extract production, processing, and commerce. The bill further updates the hemp permitting…

Farmers Count Losses as Thieves Mistake Industrial Hemp for Marijuana

Since the legalization of hemp in 2018 under the Department of Agriculture Farm Bill, many farmers started cultivating hemp in 2019, and apart from the usual challenges of growing hemp such as mold and harsh weather conditions, hemp farmers had to face theft of their crop as thieves mistook hemp for marijuana. Demarkus Medley owns a small boutique-style farm in Galesburg, Illinois, and grows leafy greens and lettuce using aquaponics. Aquaponics is a system where fish provide nutrients required for growing crops. However, in 2019, he decided to cultivate hemp, but as the harvesting neared, he noticed that some of…

Study Finds That Hemp Legalization Has Boosted Bee Numbers

Scientists have discovered that since the legalization of industrial hemp took place in 2018 under the Department of Agriculture Farm Bill, the newly green fields of Cannabis Sativa L. have had unexpected benefits upon the bee population as it is helping boost their numbers. Hemp is exclusively pollinated via wind and therefore creates a lot of pollen for a variety of bee species. And since legalization, and the whole of 2019, growers have been cultivating industrial hemp outdoors instead of hiding them in house basements like it was years before legalization. The journal Environmental Entomology published the study that found…

5 Mistakes New Hemp Growers Should Avoid

Ever since the Farm Bill legalized the cultivation and sale of industrial hemp and its extracts, the hemp industry has been on a roll. Already worth millions of dollars in sales, the industry is expected to hit $20 billion by 2024. While hemp seems like the prime cash crop to grow this year, the line between success and failure is a very thin one. Hemp had been outlawed for decades, and even though it's legal at the federal level, there's a lot that's still shrouded in mystery, especially concerning genetics. And this can make it really hard to thrive as…

USDA Insists It Will Not Raise Hemp THC Limit

On Thursday, the USDA said that the proposed rule for hemp would not be amended to increase the stipulated limit for THC. The department argued that only Congress could change the policy. The department further said that it is willing to change some of the other rules, as suggested by the farmers and industry stakeholders. The officials also said that after the 2020 harvest, the department would be opening up the second comment period to gather more input before finalizing the interim final rules. Legislators and industry stakeholders have made several appeals to the USDA to change its regulations on…

Oregon Raises THC Limit for Some Hemp Products

For the last few years, the health, sports, and wellness industries have been shaken up by the emergence of a group of unique chemicals called cannabinoids. These chemicals are produced by the cannabis plant, and even though most of the research into their abilities is in its preliminary stages, we can conclusively say they have medical properties. In December 2018, Congress passed the Farm Bill, effectively making the cultivation and sale of hemp and its derivatives legal. Cannabidiol, or CBD, is one of the cannabinoids produced by cannabis, and the legislation kick-started the CBD craze that's currently gripping the U.S.…

USDA Unveils Two Additional Hemp Insurance Programs

On Thursday, the USDA announced that in the event of natural disasters, hemp farmers would enjoy the benefit of being covered under two crop insurance programs. The first pilot program referred to as the Multi-Peril Crop Insurance would be available to farmers during the 2020 planting season, and would be accessible for farmers in several counties in 21 states. The insurance program provides coverage for farmers whose crop was lost due to weather, fire, diseases, or other natural occurrences, and the insurance program covers hemp cultivated for fiber, grain, or CBD extraction. Insurance coverage will be availed to farms that…

Maine Backtracks on Plan to Double Hemp License Fees

The budding U.S. hemp sector can only be described as chaotic. After decades of prohibition, hemp cultivation became legal after Congress passed the 2018 Farm Bill. However, the barebones legislation granted only one provision, all hemp had to have less than 0.3% THC for it to be legal. Months later, in October, the USDA published its interim final rule on hemp. In just a couple of months, the hemp industry was worth millions in sales. A large chunk of the demand for hemp can be attributed to cannabidiol (CBD), a chemical that's produced by the plant. It's said to have…

Kentucky Lawmakers Pass Hemp Bill and Send it to the Governor

Hemp represents a new frontier for American farmers. If things go well, they may be saying goodbye to crops like soybeans and wheat. It has a multitude of applications, and it produces a group of chemicals called cannabinoids that have wide-ranging medicinal properties. The 2018 Farm Bill legalized hemp after decades of prohibition, classifying industrial hemp as cannabis with less than 0.3% THC. THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) is responsible for marijuana's infamous 'high', and for hemp to be legal, it has to have minuscule amounts of it. Farmers can now grow the crop under state or tribal programs. The legislation also…
