First Hemp Strain Awarded a US Patent

The famous Stanley brothers from Colorado seem to have secured what is widely regarded as the first hemp plant patent in the U.S. According to records at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Charlotte’s Web Holdings Inc. got a patent for a distinct and new hemp cultivar on July 2, 2019. It has emerged that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has completed drafting the national hemp cultivation rules and submitted them to the White House for approval before they can be released to the public. The two separate cases in Idaho that had captured the attention of the entire hemp industry have been closed with prosecutors agreeing plea deals with the accused drivers. The drivers pleaded guilty to lesser charges in exchange for their freedom and lighter sentences.
