USDA Admits National THC Testing Standards Are Difficult to Formulate

William Richmond, the head of USDA’s Specialty Crops Program, has revealed that the federal regulator is finding it hard to formulate THC testing standards for the entire country. He made this admission while speaking at a hemp industry conference organized by the American Herbal Products Association in Denver last week. Richmond also stated that the USDA has to adhere to the requirement stipulated in the 2018 Farm Bill to the effect that a testing protocol which uses a reliable method, such as post-decarboxylation testing, has to be included in the national hemp rules written by the federal regulators. Georgia Hemp Farming Act Prompts Police to Drop Marijuana Charges

When Gov. Brian Kemp signed Georgia’s Hemp Farming Act in May, little did he know the ripple effects that this law would have regarding the prosecution of marijuana cases in the state. By law, hemp is defined as cannabis whose THC content is less than 0.3 percent while marijuana has a higher percentage of the psychoactive compound (and that is why users get high). With the enactment of the hemp cultivation law, prosecutors around the state are announcing changes to the way they handle low-level marijuana cases. For example, the Solicitor General of Gwinnett County publicly announced that the county…

EU Hemp Rules Causing Headaches for Small Farmers

If you thought only U.S. hemp and CBD industry players were running into problems with regulators, you thought wrong. The EU’s “Novel Foods” rules are threatening the very livelihood of small hemp farmers who are being told that they can no longer sell the hemp products that they have been selling unless those products are taken through a lengthy and costly testing process. It all started when hemp was included in the EU’s Novel Food Catalogue as a food item that wasn’t consumed within the region before 1997. This means that for any food ingredient derived from hemp to be…

Central Oregon Hemp Farms Hit By Devastating Hailstorm

On Friday, Central Oregon hemp farmers watched in horror as severe thunderstorms pelted their hemp farms with balls of hail that were as big as golf balls. Nearly 500 acres were affected, and initial estimates are putting the loss at $25 million. Most of the hemp that is grown in Central Oregon is dedicated to hemp varieties intended for CBD extraction. With each feminized seed being sold at $1, each acre of this type of hemp costs about $50,000 in seed alone. It isn’t yet clear whether the affected plants will survive the effects of the hailstorm, so the final…

Two Bills Await Consideration as California Hemp Program Lags Behind

While many states have already passed hemp laws and submitted their plans to the USDA for approval, California is lagging behind and hasn’t yet passed a law to bring the state’s hemp laws in line with the 2018 Farm Act. Two bills await the lawmakers once the summer recess ends and business resumes on Monday next week. The first bill focusses on hemp cultivation. This bill is expected to compel the California Department of Agriculture to submit its hemp cultivation plan to the USDA by January 31 next year. However, Sean Donahoe, an Oakland-based marijuana consultant, says that the lawmakers…

Experts Say Chinese Tariffs Won’t Affect the US Hemp Industry

While many prospective and current hemp farmers in the U.S. may have entered panic mode when China announced that hemp and its products would be hit with added tariffs in the ongoing trade war between China and the U.S., experts are of the opinion that there is currently no need for hemp farmers and processors to worry. One of the reasons that economic experts cite to reassure hemp farmers is that currently, it is hard to trace how much hemp is being sold to China from the U.S. This means that while hemp was included among the agricultural products to…
