Oregon Senators Object to USDA Hemp Testing Rules

Few industries can claim to have experienced the same explosion of growth the hemp sector has enjoyed. Valued at $4.4 billion in 2018, the industry is expected to be worth a whopping $14.67 billion by 2026. While these figures paint an awesome picture, the hemp sector didn't have the time to grow organically with comprehensive regulations already in place. The USDA has had to play catch up, releasing its interim final rule on hemp a year after the 2018 Farm Bill legalized the cultivation of industrial hemp. While industry stakeholders are glad the industry now has structure, the restrictive nature…

Hemp Industry Concerned That DEA Is Involved in Crop’s Regulation

The new interim final rule introduced by the USDA consists of a stringent process of testing THC in industrial hemp. This has created an air of concern among hemp farmers and hemp industry advocates. On October 31, the U.S. Department of Agriculture released the interim federal rule for industrial hemp stipulating that testing of THC in hemp crop would be conducted by laboratories which are registered with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). This has brought about panic among industry members as it would create delays in testing and holdups, particularly in areas which are far from the registered labs.…

First US Hemp Tracking System Launched in Delaware

If hemp were a person, they'd be having the time of their life right now. For the past few years, the crop has been subject to a slew of legislation that released it from the shakes of prohibition. First, the 2018 Hemp Farming Act, part of the Farm Bill, classified cannabis with less than 0.3% THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) as hemp. This farmers in all 50 states were allowed to grow the cash crop under state hemp programs. Ohio Farmers Fear Draft Hemp Rules Could Lock Them Out

The hemp industry, it seems, is on a wild roller coaster that won't seem to stop. For starters, the crop has for decades had a taboo aspect to it because of its relation to the infamous marijuana. Still, it has numerous other non-intoxicating uses, and in 2018, Congress passed the Farm Bill, effectively legalizing the cultivation of industrial hemp. The sector quickly grew carried by demand for the increasingly popular hemp extract cannabidiol (CBD), and in just one short year, the industry was flooded with thousands of unregulated CBD products. After continued calls for the United States Department of Agriculture…
