Most tribes in Wyoming view medical marijuana and hemp as a lucrative venture. Nearing the end of September, the General Council in the Eastern Shoshone tribe voted in a resolution allowing a group to examine the legalization of medical marijuana and hemp production. Senate Minority Leader Asks USDA to Extend Hemp Comments Period

The Senate Minority Leader, Chuck Schumer, has requested the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) to prolong the public comment duration for the newly released draft hemp rules. He said the reason for his request is because he is concerned about some prohibitory rules included therein. On Wednesday, Schumer visited a hemp farm in New York, Miller Organics; while there, he discussed the economic potential of industrial hemp and its derivatives. In the month of October, the USDA released draft rules for the crop and although some stakeholders believe they are headed on the right track, others said that the…

Here Are the Details of Annual US Hemp Imports

Hemp has had an interesting history in the United States. Before 2010, the hemp industry operated in the fringes of the law, with hemp continually being lumped in with its illicit cousin marijuana for years. The Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2009 changed all that and started a new era for the U.S. hemp market. The legislation sought to clarify the differences between industrial hemp and marijuana, as well as to repeal federal laws that forbid the cultivation and sale of industrial hemp. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the country had imported hemp worth $3.07 million in 2009. However,…

Oregon Senators Object to USDA Hemp Testing Rules

Few industries can claim to have experienced the same explosion of growth the hemp sector has enjoyed. Valued at $4.4 billion in 2018, the industry is expected to be worth a whopping $14.67 billion by 2026. While these figures paint an awesome picture, the hemp sector didn't have the time to grow organically with comprehensive regulations already in place. The USDA has had to play catch up, releasing its interim final rule on hemp a year after the 2018 Farm Bill legalized the cultivation of industrial hemp. While industry stakeholders are glad the industry now has structure, the restrictive nature…
