Designers Compete to Portray Hemp as the Material For the Future

Hemp’s versatility is almost mind-boggling. Said to have more than 2000 uses, the amount of things you could do with hemp seems almost endless. It can be used to make a variety of industrial products such as rope, textiles, and bioplastics, but did you know hemp can also be used to make clothes? It is a strong, versatile and cost-effective alternative, and it has been used to make fabric for thousands of years.

Hemp clothing is still a thing of the present. A Kentucky fashion show will feature a variety of designs from local and international designers, all created using sustainable products such as hemp. Dubbed the Future of Fashion 2020, the show will showcase contemporary high fashion and easy to wear looks from American and international designers. Celebrity judges such as America’s Next Top Model favorite Laura Kirkpatrick will choose the best pairing of avant-garde and ready to wear looks. The first pick gets $1,000 and a feature in a fashion editorial in Sophisticated Living Magazine.

The event’s originator, Lexington-based designer Soreyda Benedit Begley, says that it offers both well-known and up-coming designers a chance to share their visions for a fairer, less wasteful and more exuberant fashion industry. “I talk with people all the time about how fashion is elitist, how elites seem to hoard it, and how many people that aren’t familiar with the language of ‘fine art’ are intimidated by it. But fashion and style really come from the people on the street. It’s for everyone, it’s personal and individual, and I want people to take ownership,” she says.

She first came into contact with hemp as a fabric fifteen years ago when a customer asked her to design the gowns for an eco-wedding. “I looked at silk, linen, and many other materials, but hemp came out on top every time. It was really beautiful and so elegant,” she says. Her customer was so happy that she got even more hemp clothing samples, and she’s never looked for another eco-friendly option. At the time, pure hemp was a little rough, so she settled for a 55/45 hemp-silk blend. However, today’s designers have access to a variety of soft, durable fabrics made purely from hemp or blended with materials like silk and cotton.

Designers interested in joining the competition can sign up through the organizers, and they will be given access to materials, equipment, and guidance if needed.

Experts see such events as welcome to companies like No Borders Inc. (OTC: NBDR) and MCTC Holdings Inc. (OTC: MCTC) since the footprint of hemp sinks deeper into different sectors of society, and that portends well for the industry.
