Cornell University Secures Hemp Cultivation Research Partnership

Cornell University announced in a press release that it had secured a research partnership with a global agricultural company in order to study hemp and help farmers with much-needed information.

The research that will be conducted by Cornell University and Pyxus International will last for an unspecified number of years. This partnership was born out of the mutual interest of the two parties in industrial hemp.

During the first year of this collaboration, attention will be centered on four key objectives.

The first objective involves comparing the different hemp cultivars that are available for the commercial cultivation of CBD-rich plants. This evaluation will be helpful in identifying the varieties that are best suited to the local conditions, and the ones which will give the best yields.

The second objective during the first year of the research is to understand the production of different cannabinoids by hemp plants during the different phases of the flowering stage. It should be remembered that CBD is primarily extracted from hemp flowers, so understanding how the levels of cannabinoids vary in the different flowering stages is vital in determining the most appropriate time to harvest hemp for CBD extraction purposes.

The third area of interest during the maiden year of the research done by Cornell University and Pyxus International is looking into how different controlled stress conditions can affect the level of cannabinoids present in hemp plants. Some of the stress conditions studied could include drought conditions (moisture stress), exposure to high moisture levels, pest infestation and other stress factors.

The fourth objective is to extend knowledge to industrial hemp farmers about hemp cultivars for CBD production and the cannabinoid accumulation by those plants.

The executive vice president at Pyxus International in charge of Global Specialty Products, Bryan Mazur, revealed that the company is eager to learn what Cornell University has to uncover about hemp. He added that the partnership with Cornell University will later be expanded as other players and more resources are mobilized.

Larry Smart, a professor of plant genetics and breeding at Cornell University, stated that the research they are conducting will be very valuable to farmers since there are no manuals to guide hemp farmers as they cultivate this lucrative crop. Their research will take guesswork out of the cultivation process, Larry Smart added.

Experts are of the view that all industry players, including Geyser Brands Inc. (TSX.V: GYSR) and Green Hygienics Holdings Inc. (OTCQB: GRYN), should applaud and possibly join such research collaborations so that facts can underlie every decision made in the hemp industry.
