Hemp Company Looks to Cash in on Novel Cannabinoids Beyond CBD

Hemp is, without a doubt, one of the most attractive cash crops right now. A plant known for its versatility in use, it has been subject to a slew of legislation over the past few years that have resulted in an immense uptake in supply. In December 2018, Congress passed the Farm Bill, legislation that designated cannabis plants with less than 0.3 percent THC content as industrial hemp, and removed it from the list of controlled substances, in effect legalizing hemp at the federal level. In October, the USDA released its interim rules on hemp, finally providing a framework for farmers to grow, market, and sell their hemp.

One issue that still plagues the industry is quality control. A wide range of suppliers, coupled with an infantile regulatory system, has resulted in crops of varied quality. One company, however, is actively taking steps to take care of this issue. Hemptown USA uses carefully refined techniques to grow, harvest, and process hemp to ensure the quality of their end product. Rod Wolterman, Hemptown USA Chairman, says, “We look to bring the safest and most reliable products to the marketplace. The consumer should have confidence that the label claims match the product inside.”

The company purchases specialized seeds from recognized sellers. These genetically superior seeds are designed to have very low THC levels and high concentrations of cannabidiol. Quality control is one of Hemptown USA’s main focus, and it has partnered with one of the industry’s most recognized processors, Elemental Processing. Kirkman Labs, which Hemptown USA acquired in mid-2019, is in charge of consumer product development.

However, as the world goes crazy about CBD, Hemptown USA is looking beyond it. The cannabis plant is home to over a hundred active cannabinoids, and for a lot of them, research is still in its infancy. Due to the superior genetics and processes the company employs, it has been able to produce up to 15 percent full spectrum cannabigerol (CBG), another cannabinoid with great potential. In 2019, a third of Hemptown’s crop will be high CBG, full-spectrum hemp. “More cannabinoids means more products, more solutions, and better-designed formulations for specific ailments,” says Wolterman. “Companies focused on these alternative products are going to lead the industry,” he adds.

The company has just harvested over 500 acres of rare, high CBG genetics, and they are poised to be one of the largest CBG producers in North America. The company has an additional 1,000 acres in Kentucky and Colorado, where the microclimate and soil conditions are ideal for growing premium genetics. “We’ll always be one cannabinoid ahead,” says Wolterman.

It is widely thought that the hemp industry, including companies like VPR Brands LP (OTCQB: VPRB), are working behind the scenes to explore the array of cannabinoids present in the cannabis plant.
