Idaho Hemp Building Company Gets National Recognition

Matthew Mead and Tommy Gibbons are the founders of Hempitecture, a hemp company based in Ketchum, Idaho. The company specializes in hemp building projects. The pair made it into the annual Forbes Magazine list of “30 under 30,” which honors individuals who are 30 years or younger for starting a business or making notable achievements.

Making it into the list gives one a sense of validation, said Gibbons. He adds that being recognized legitimized their business since many people did not understand what they were trying to create.

Mead, who previously served as a planning and zoning commissioner, is now working with architects, engineers, and developers to develop eco-friendly building materials.

Hempitecture helps in incorporating building materials made of hemp, such as hempcrete, into the building’s construction and during renovations. Hempcrete is an insulation material made from hemp. According to Gibbons, hempcrete is a sustainable building material that will be used for many years to come.

Hempcrete is suitable for attics and can also be used to partition interior walls to heat and cool your home. Hemp building materials also help in absorbing CO2 emissions.

According to Gibbons, the construction of buildings uses a lot of material and energy, and this can be offset by using natural fiber that is gotten from hemp. More research is being carried out on industrial hemp and ways to incorporate it further in the building process, as the market continues to grow in the U.S.

Hemp production was legalized under the 2018 Farm Bill; however, it is still prohibited in some states such as Idaho. Despite the illegality of the crop, Gibbons said they are still able to conduct their business in the state.

He further noted that there is a difference in the hemp plant grown for building applications and that cultivated for CBD purposes.

Gibbons also said that if hemp were legalized in Idaho, it would help them expand their operations since they would be able to source the materials locally.

Hempitecture was formed in 2013 by Mead, who was later joined by Gibbons in 2018. The company is committed to developing building materials that are energy efficient, non-toxic, and can absorb CO2 from the environment. Hempcrete provides builders with well-tested pozzolan additives for local hydrated lime and natural cement.

Builders should opt to use hemp insulation materials because they are fireproof, healthy, and longlasting since they are not susceptible to mold or pests. They also help you save money since they do not incur maintenance costs.

Analysts feel that hemp entrepreneurs like Mead and Gibbons warm the hearts of cannabis companies like LiveWire Ergogenics Inc. (OTC: LVVV) and Sugarmade Inc. (OTCQB: SGMD) that want to see hemp being used in as many aspects of daily life as possible.
