Maine Farmer Offers First Pick-Your-Own Hemp Crop

As the hemp industry takes root around the country, players at different levels of the value chain are bringing innovative ways to tap the opportunities that the industry has to offer. One farm in Whitefield, Maine has brought the pick-your-own concept from its fruit fields to hemp farming and this farm is set to make a killing using this novel way of selling fresh hemp.

Sheepscot General Farm LLC is growing hemp for the first time this year. Ben Marcus and Hammer Marcus, the owners of this farm, are betting that the popularity of CBD will create a market for their hemp crop and supplement the decent income that they have been earning from their organic strawberry fields.

Their pick-your-own marketing concept for the organic strawberries is hugely popular in the area and they recently hosted a tour of their hemp field. After the tour, farm visitors were treated to an expert presentation on CBD by a medical cannabis expert who owns a medical marijuana dispensary called Intergr8 Health.

Ben and Hammer Marcus revealed that their plan is to see nearly all the hemp grown on the three-acre lot picked off the plant by the final consumers. They prefer this method even if several processors have contacted them and expressed interest in buying the harvest for processing into different CBD products, such as tinctures.

The hemp grown by Sheepscot General Farm is one of the few hemp fields that have been certified organic by the state agriculture authorities. The USDA hasn’t released its guidelines for the certification of hemp as organic, so state-level certification is what is currently available.

Since hemp looks, feels and smells like marijuana, the owners of Sheepscot General Farm have posted several signs telling people that what they are growing is hemp, which is low in THC and will not make them high. This is their way of warding off those who may be tempted to pull up some plants under the mistaken belief that the plants are marijuana.

Hammer explains that they have decided to use the pick-your-own model of marketing their hemp because they want to cut out the middleman and allow final users to realize cost savings.

He also adds that their approach ties in well with the medicinal history of the hemp plant which was used for thousands of years as a whole-plant remedy for a variety of health challenges.

The farm wants its customers to pick the fresh hemp flower or other parts of the plant and dry or freeze it for use in tinctures, salves, edibles and other end uses. This experience will show people how easy it is to enjoy the benefits of hemp without spending a ton of money in the process.

Industry watchers are convinced bigger hemp industry players like SinglePoint Inc. (OTCQB: SING) and Sugarmade Inc. (OTCQB: SGMD) can’t stop being amazed by how creative people are getting as the hemp industry takes shape in the U.S.
