New Study Says CBD Lotion Reduces UV Damage to Skin

New research has determined that applying lotion infused with CBD to one’s skin may be linked to a reduced risk of damage from ultraviolet (UV) rays. The research was carried out by a team of researchers from Northwestern University, George Washington University, the Center for Clinical and Cosmetic Research and the University of Miami.

The researchers’ objective was to find out whether the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of CBD could alleviate skin aging and cancer risks associated with exposure to the sun, particularly exposure to ultraviolet-A radiation. This is mainly because UV rays contribute to photocarcinogenesis and photoaging by generating oxidative and inflammation damage.

For their research, the investigators recruited 20 healthy volunteers, all between 23 and 64 years of age. Once their baseline data was collected, they volunteers received a cream infused with CBD or a placebo. They were instructed to apply a small portion to their buttocks two times a day for a two-week period. In addition, they received minimal targeted irradiation with ultraviolet-A.

After a day had passed, the investigators took biopsies and analyzed for skin-damage indicators. They determined that 21% of the volunteers who had used the CBD cream had less damage in comparison to the control group, which used a placebo. In fact, 47% of the volunteers suffered comparable damage while another 11% demonstrated better results after using the placebo vs. the CBD lotion.

It should be noted that the point of this research wasn’t to propose that people ditch sunscreen for CBD lotion. Additionally, the placebo wasn’t sunscreen.

In their report, the authors explained that their research highlighted CBD’s protective potential against DNA and mtDNA damage caused by UVA. To the best of the researchers’ knowledge, theirs is the first study showing the effectiveness of topical CBD in reducing UVA photoaging and premutagenic markers in humans.

The investigators added that identifying new compounds that could counteract photoimmunosuppression, cutaneous damage and oxidative stress caused by UVA was important.

The research’s limitations included the small sample size, with the investigators revealing that only fair-skinned individuals took part in the experiment. This highlights the need for future studies to find out whether CBD may have similar effects on individuals with darker skin tones.

The researchers reported their findings in the “Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.

Meanwhile, separate research has determined that some minor cannabinoids may possess anticancer effects on leukemia. Also, earlier in May, an industry-backed study determined that oral CBD solution could treat mild to moderate anxiety effectively.

Many companies, such as Software Effective Solutions Corp. (d/b/a MedCana) (OTC: SFWJ), are investing in state-of-the-art labs to study how best the therapeutic properties of different cannabinoids can be leveraged in the management of different ailments or conditions. It is likely that the coming years will see plenty of cannabinoid products customized to help patients with specific conditions and illnesses.
