People who would like to learn more about the possibilities inherent in industrial hemp can have all their questions answered during a class that has been organized at Pine City High School, Minnesota on Wednesday (October 2) starting at 6:30 pm.
Industrial hemp is the federally legal “cousin” of marijuana. By law, hemp should have no more than 0.3 percent THC on a dry weight basis. Because of its close resemblance to marijuana, one must obtain a license from the state in order to grow this crop.
Additionally, inspectors from the state agriculture department have to perform compliance tests to ascertain that the hemp plants a licensed grower is cultivating don’t exceed the legal THC limit.
The class that will be held at Pine City High School is titled “The Art of Sustainable Living: Industrial Hemp.” The class will be facilitated by Jane Leverenz who will explain, in detail, how industrial hemp can boost the local economy in Pine City or anywhere else.
She will also explain the different ways in which industrial hemp can be used in addition to taking attendees through the steps that one has to go through in order to obtain a hemp license (cultivation, extraction or processing, etc.) from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.
Leverenz energetically stated that she had a “bucket of information” to share and that only time constraints would limit how much she discusses during the planned class.
She said that hemp farmers almost never have to deal with weeds in their farms because the plants cover the ground so quickly that weeds don’t have any chance to emerge.
Leverenz reveals that she learned all this by doing extensive research about industrial hemp. Her research covers a period of nearly 60 years.
She also noted that Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and many other famous Americans in the country’s history were industrial hemp farmers. She therefore concluded that the bad name hemp has had to endure over the decades has nothing to do with the plant itself but with the politics of the day that demonized all cannabis plants. The recent legalization of industrial hemp now gives the country a chance to rediscover the wonders of the hemp plant, and this class on Wednesday is her small contribution towards the reawakening.
