Hemp has various applications, with its stalk being made of fibers that are flexible and soft. Hurds, the plant’s woody inner core, are hard and rigid. Americhanvre, a company offering hemp-building solutions, recently passed a fire-resistance test for its product, Ereasy.
The Ereasy system is a spray-on application kit that delivers hempcrete, which is a construction material that has been used in construction for centuries. For instance, hempcrete plaster was applied more than 1,000 years ago on the walls of Ellora Caves in India. The manmade caves are a World Heritage site and were cut into rock then plastered from the inside. Another example is a bridge abutment in France that may have been built as early as the sixth century AD.
Hempcrete, which normally comprises of chipped/shredded hemp hurd, water and lime, may also include cement, clay and other additives. The benefits of this durable and light building material include its fire resistance, nontoxic byproducts, high thermal mass, resistance to mold and pests, sound dampening, carbon sequestration capabilities and breathability.
The substance’s carbon sequestration attributes are especially interesting because hemp not only stores carbon as it grows but hempcrete continues to absorb carbon even as a product. It should be noted, however, that hempcrete is not as strong as traditional concrete.
The Ereasy spray-on product was developed in France about 10 years ago, with Americhanvre Cast Hemp becoming the product’s distributor in the North American region a few years ago. Americhanvre announced recently that this hempcrete product had received a one-hour rating on fire resistance under ASTM E-119. This is the standard used to measure the response of assemblies, products or materials to flame and heat under controlled conditions.
Americhanvre revealed that this was the first time a full-scale test had been conducted on a section of hempcrete wall. In its statement, the company explained that the panel’s exterior face, which had sensors, wasn’t damaged even after firing at 1,700o F for 60 minutes with a hose stream test conducted soon after.
It is noted in the report that the panel’s temperature never rose higher than the ambient temperature. Americhanvre added that the official rating supported Ereasy hempcrete’s fire resistance attributes in the United States. This new rating will allow the company to access larger-scale commercial projects for this hempcrete system in America.
In 2023, the company’s ASTM C-518 thermal resistance product was confirmed to have an R value of R2.2 per inch, based on European data. In addition to insulation, hemp is also utilized in other building products, such as particle board.
In the future, the use of hurd in the manufacture of various construction materials could provide an economically viable way to use some of the biomass waste after cannabis companies such as Canopy Growth Corp. (NASDAQ: CGC) (TSX: WEED) have extracted the parts of the plant that they use in making their primary products.
