A new study has found that CBD’s antioxidant and anti-aging properties make it a good addition in some skin products. The study was conducted by three researchers from Thailand’s National Science and Technology Development Agency and Prince of Songkla University.
Their objective was to explore the possible bioactivities and safety of CBD by studying wound healing and anti-aging activities at the cellular level. The researchers examined the effects of CBD on two cell types; keratinocytes and fibroblasts over a 24-hour period. They discovered that if the cannabinoid was administered in low concentrations, it considerably improved the growth of fibroblasts and keratinocytes. They also observed that it was safe for use on the skin.
In their report, the researchers explained that CBD demonstrated many properties that could be used in the development of topical cosmeceutical products like wound healing products, hair care products, and sun protection products. They added that CBD in low concentrations didn’t induce cytotoxicity when administered for short-term treatments.
Additionally, they observed that the cannabinoid’s antioxidant effects appeared to neutralize oxidative stress at the cellular level. Normally, oxidative stress damages DNA, disrupts cell functions, and triggers inflammation.
The researchers also found that CBD had the potential to promote certain cell activities in the long term.
With regard to wound healing, the researchers observed that the cannabinoid could influence the expression of certain genes involved in this process, which supports its use as a therapeutic agent for anti-aging and skin repair applications. In their report, the researchers suggested that future research look at the effects of CBD over 48 and 72-hour periods, as this would allow them to observe the cannabinoid’s delayed effects.
They added that future research could also use human skin and 3-D skin models to understand skin processes better after the cannabinoid was applied as well as confirm the safety of the compound’s use over the long-term.
Furthermore, they cautioned against the degradation of CBD, which could happen when the compound was exposed to extreme temperatures, low and high pH environments, and light. The researchers noted that the cannabinoid’s stability could be enhanced by storing it at low temperatures and protecting it from oxygen and light.
The study had some limitations, including their use of a single-layer cell model, which didn’t reflect the intricacy of the skin layer.
The researchers’ findings were published in the Pharmaceuticals journal. This is the latest study to examine the use of CBD in managing certain skin conditions and promote wound healing.
