Tests Reveal Hemp Products in Florida are Highly Potent, Contain Pesticides

A recent analysis conducted on more than forty different hemp products has found that smoke shops and vape stores in the state of Florida are selling illegal cannabis contaminated with toxic pesticides.

Under state law, hemp is defined as cannabis with a 0.3% THC concentration or less. Products under this threshold are sold over the counter to individuals aged 21 and above. Any products that have higher THC amounts are illegal in the state, outside its medical cannabis program.

The analysis was focused on determining how pure the products were and how often cannabis was being sold as hemp. Forty-one products were purchased from six cities, both in stores and online. Twelve vapes, seven gummies, and 22 joints were tested for pesticides, mold, yeast, and potency. The lab testing the products, Lakeland’s Modern Canna Laboratories, is one of the three labs certified by the state to test both marijuana and hemp.

The results showed that 35 of the samples contained significant THC concentrations, with one vape and five gummies below the threshold. Twelve vape and flower samples also failed the pesticide tests, with myclobutanil being the most detected fungicide. This chemical was banned in the state for inhalation as it releases hydrogen cyanide when smoked or vaped.

In smaller doses, exposure to the chemicals found in the products has been known to cause diarrhea, vomiting, eye or skin irritation, and headaches.

Additionally, every flower product purchased was too strong to be considered hemp under state regulations. The results show the product with the highest THC amount at 76.1% was a rechargeable vape pen dubbed Habit Sauce Lava Cake, which was purchased at Kush Cloud, Tampa. Havana Hemp Zkittles flower, bought at One Stop Smoke Shop in Miami Beach, had 22% THC in total.

Most of the products tested are sold as hemp, which indicates that the state’s billion-dollar hemp industry is selling possibly dangerous products to consumers.

Of the manufacturers and retailers whose products were found to be potent or contaminated, the majority refuted the laboratory results, claiming that their products had been tested and met the standards of the law for both purity and potency. Under federal law, manufacturers of hemp are required to test their products thirty days before harvest. This helps ensure compliance.

Firms often publish their laboratory reports online when marketing their products.

The recent lab results are being delivered just as voters in the state decide whether to legalize recreational cannabis at the ballot.

These findings about tainted and potent hemp products make a strong case for regulations governing these products so that any firms selling hemp derivatives or products can adhere to the same rules that cannabis firms like Software Effective Solutions Corp. (d/b/a MedCana) (OTC: SFWJ) operate under in the jurisdictions where they are licensed to conduct their business activities.
