University of Georgia Hemp Trials Show Promise

The future of hemp in Georgia begins at University Georgia where there are several dozens of plants ready for harvesting. The crops, planted on a one-third acre, are now sprouting fuzzy flowers, which are used to make the CBD oil used for treating conditions such as anxiety and insomnia.

The university horticulturist Tim Cooling is growing the crop as a test crop for farmers in Georgia planning to grow hemp next year. This spring, the lawmakers voted for in-house hemp production. At the moment, Georgia is importing all CBD products.

In his research, Cooling is trying to find the best methods of growing hemp, the yield per acre, and the strains that will prosper in Georgia’s climate, which is hot and humid. He will then pass on his findings to the farmers. His crop is to be turned to manure once his research is done.

According to Cooling, the farmers may be able to grow hemp since Georgia has a long growing season.

As soon as the federal and state regulators approve hemp growth in the next few months, farmers in Georgia will join the booming hemp industry.

In the U.S, there are 35 states growing hemp for commercial purposes, and Georgia is looking to be a significant contributor to the industry. According to Hemp Industry Daily, this year, the CBD sales are estimated to be $1.2 billion globally, and an increase of $6 billion is forecasted by 2022.

Unlike marijuana, hemp has close to zero levels of THC, which is responsible for triggering a high in users. When tested, the levels of THC in hemp should always be 0.3% or less.

Cooling planted the first hemp crop in Georgia in June after he got the seeds from the Carolinas. He planted 24 varieties at campuses in Watkinsville in North Georgia and Tifton in South Georgia. Some strains grew to 9 feet while others barely sprouted. They harvested the crops a few weeks ago. The second crop was planted in early August.

Cooling aims at providing the right information to prevent the farmers from picking the wrong varieties, which may cost them much money.

Cooling said that although hemp can grow in all of Georgia, it seems to favor the Northern Georgia Mountains, where the weather is slightly cool. The southern Georgia farmers should be careful when choosing their varieties.

Growing hemp comes with a bundle of challenges. For example, it will cost the farmers $3 or $4 to plant a single plant. It is also labor-intensive to harvest, dry, and strip the biomass.

Meanwhile, hemp processing companies are ready to extract CBD oil from the plants. For instance, in Watkinsville, there is a company called GA Xtracts, which has the necessary equipment for testing, processing, and turning hemp into the “golden oil”. With the extracts, the company intends to make tinctures, lotions, ointments, soaps, and pills.

The Department of Agriculture in Georgia will review and finalize its regulations after the U.S. Department of Agriculture releases the rules for the hemp program hopefully before 2020 planting season.

Now that all looks set for Georgia to join the hemp arena, companies like VPR Brands LP (OTCQB:VPRB) and Earth Science Tech Inc. (OTCQB: ETST) must be glad that more states are coming on board to pertake of the benefits of growing hemp.
