Vermont Innovator Makes Unique, Durable and Environmentally Friendly Hemp Guitars

When you hear the word hemp, your mind may immediately rush to cannabidiol (CBD), paper, and maybe clothing. However, one entrepreneur wants to make hemp musical instruments, particularly guitars, the next big thing that can be made from this versatile plant.

Jay Burstein, the owner and founder of BugOut Guitars based in Randolph, Vermont, is the man who wants to transform the musical instrument industry so that manufacturers switch to using hemp.

Burstein is quick to admit that he isn’t a hemp farmer and isn’t so much taken up by agriculture, but he was fascinated by hemp fiber and that is where his passion lies.

His journey into music started with percussion instruments, but he learned guitar along the way. During a backpacking trip to South America, Burstein got so many problems with his guitar that he ended up learning (on the job) how to repair guitars. The problems he encountered with his instrument largely stemmed from the effects of changing climate conditions (temperature, humidity, etc.).

When he returned from his trip, Burstein was employed in a guitar shop in New Mexico and that gave him added impetus to perfect his skill of repairing guitars.

Burstein left New Mexico and returned to Vermont to work at a startup specializing in making guitars using carbon fiber. Burstein was surprised to learn that the company used flax fiber as a filler material. The fibers were very strong and matched well with carbon fiber.

As fate would have it, Vermont legalized hemp at around that time and this got Burstein thinking about using hemp fiber instead of flax fiber in the making of guitars.

When his employers closed shop, Burstein got the break he needed to start using hemp alone to make guitars. He ditched using carbon fiber because he had got a firsthand experience of how toxic that material was.

Burstein is now fully engaged in making hemp guitars and he relies on hemp stalks sourced from Colorado. He says hemp farmers in Vermont are mainly growing hemp for CBD, and that doesn’t give good fibers.

Jay Burstein sings the praises of his hemp guitars and gives some of the benefits of these instruments. First, he says that they are as strong and durable as carbon fiber guitars, but they don’t come with the toxicity of carbon fiber.

Hemp is readily available and therefore saves trees from being cut to make guitars and other musical instruments. These hemp guitars can also cope with different climatic conditions, so buyers of his instruments are unlikely to get the same problems that he experienced while traveling with his previous wooden guitar.

At the moment, Burstein is meeting the needs of a niche market, and therefore only makes his guitars to order. Experts believe such stories as those of Burstein encourage hemp industry companies like Green Hygienics Holdings Inc. (OTCQB: GRYN) and Hemptown USA to see an even bigger future for the hemp industry.
